Custom Candle Boxes with Inserts

Printed candle boxes that come with an insert cut to grab your jar or tin, so the glass isn’t bashing into the walls the whole way to the customer. Paperboard, corrugated or rigid board on the outside, card or foam inside, and we size it for one candle or a whole set.

Description

Glass jars weigh a fair bit and, weirdly, they chip at the slightest knock. Put a 10 ounce candle in a box with half an inch of play and every bump in the delivery truck becomes a small collision. Custom candle boxes with inserts take that space away. The insert holds the jar by its body or base, the box holds the insert, and the candle arrives without a crack in the glass or a dent in the wax.

Most of the brands we work with sell online first, then into boutiques and gift shops. Inserts matter more for them than for anyone, because a broken candle means a refund, a reshipment and a one star review. They also make a set of three tins or a candle and matchbox pairing look planned rather than tossed together.

Custom Candle Boxes with Inserts: Picking the Right Insert

The insert is the part to think hardest about. There are a few common types.

  • Die-cut paperboard with a round hole that the jar drops into
  • Corrugated inserts for heavier vessels and multi-candle sets
  • Foam inserts for rigid gift boxes and fragile glass
  • Simple card dividers for tins and votives

A paperboard insert is light, recyclable and printable, and it’s usually enough for a single jar in a retail box. Corrugated holds up better under weight, which is why it’s our go-to for three-wick candles and gift sets. Foam looks plush in a rigid box, though it takes up more room and isn’t as easy to recycle.

Getting the Fit Right for Jars and Tins

Here’s where most candle packaging goes wrong. The jar is measured, the box is made, and then the lid is added. A wooden lid adds height, so does a metal one, and a glass cloche adds a lot. So measure with the lid on, across the widest bit, and mention it if the jar tapers toward the bottom.

Snug, not tight. If the insert hole is too small, customers have to wrestle the jar out and can tear the card. Heat is another thing. Candles in a hot delivery van can soften, so we keep the insert away from the top of the wax wherever possible. Our candle box sizing guide covers how to measure each vessel style.

Box Styles and Printing for Candle Packaging

For retail shelves, a tuck end box in SBS paperboard with a printed insert is the most common build. It’s affordable, prints sharply and folds flat for storage. For a higher price point, a rigid lid and base box with a foam insert and gold foil logo feels like a real gift. If you ship direct, you could skip the extra carton and go with a printed mailer plus insert (then the shipping box is your display box too, which saves a step).

For finishes we’d probably suggest soft-touch or a little foil, though spot UV and embossing look good on candle boxes too. Print your scent notes, burn time and safety guidance on the side panels. If you’re going upmarket, see our luxury candle boxes or jar candle boxes, or browse all candle packaging boxes.

Custom Candle Boxes with Inserts FAQs

Do I need an insert for a candle tin?

Not always. Metal tins don’t break, so a snug box is often enough. Inserts still help if you’re packing two or three tins together, so they don’t rub and scratch the print.

Can the insert be printed?

Yes, paperboard and corrugated inserts can be printed with a pattern, a message or care instructions. People tend to notice it when they lift the candle out, which is kind of the point.

Can I try the fit before the full order?

Sure. After the digital proof, ask us for a physical sample and drop your real candle in it (lid on!). Minimums are often around 50 boxes, and once the proof is approved it’s 10 to 12 business days.
