The 3-Layer Film Structure: What Each Layer Does
Every spout pouch is made from laminated film, multiple thin layers of different materials bonded together. Each layer does a specific job. Get one layer wrong and the whole system fails.
Think of it like a sandwich. The outer layer is the “bread” facing the outside world. The middle layer is the “barrier filling” that protects against oxygen and moisture. The inner layer is the “bread” that seals tightly around your product.

Outer Layer – The Print Surface
The outer layer faces outward and is the surface that gets printed with your brand. It provides structural strength, resistance to puncturing, tearing, and abrasion from handling, shipping, and retail display.
Most common outer layer material: PET (polyethylene terephthalate)
Why PET: The outer layer provides printing quality, stiffness, and shelf appeal. PET prints sharply and beautifully. It holds up to handling without scuffing or cracking. It gives the pouch a professional feel in the customer’s hand.
Middle Layer – The Barrier
The middle layer is what actually keeps your product fresh. It blocks oxygen, moisture, light, and aroma from passing through the pouch wall. The thicker and more effective the barrier layer, the longer your product stays fresh.
Two main options:
VMPET (Vacuum Metallized PET): VMPET is PET film coated with an extremely thin layer of aluminum through a vacuum metallization process. This gives the film a bright metallic appearance and much better barrier performance than plain PET film. VMPET is rarely used alone; it works as the middle barrier layer in a laminated structure such as PET/VMPET/PE.
Shelf life with VMPET: 12-15 months for most dry and semi-liquid products. Best for: Sauces, juices, smoothies, baby food, condiments, personal care liquids.
Aluminum Foil: Aluminum foil at 7-9 microns delivers maximum barrier against oxygen, moisture, and light but costs more and prevents recyclability. Aluminum foil structures provide maximum moisture barrier.
Shelf life with aluminum foil: 18–24 months, the highest shelf life available for spout pouches. Best for: Products with long distribution chains, products sensitive to light (oils, specialty beverages), retort-processed products.
EVOH (Ethylene Vinyl Alcohol): EVOH at 5-8 microns thickness provides excellent oxygen barrier and good moisture protection at moderate cost.
EVOH sits in the middle layer and blocks oxygen with exceptional efficiency, better than VMPET, nearly as good as aluminum foil, and recyclable in mono-material structures. Best for products where oxygen is the primary freshness enemy (oils, sauces, pet food).
Inner Layer – The Seal Layer
The inner layer contacts your product directly. It must be food-safe, heat-sealable (so the pouch can be sealed closed during filling), and resistant to whatever is inside: oils, acids, alcohol, hot liquids.
