A candle in a big glass jar can weigh over a pound, easy. And that weight wants to move around. Our custom rigid candle boxes are thick chipboard wrapped in printed or specialty paper, so they keep their shape around the jar, and honestly most people end up keeping the box on a shelf afterwards.
Who buys them? Small and mid sized candle makers mostly, plus a few home fragrance shops and gift companies, the ones selling candles at a higher price. They usually come to us with the same complaint (a flimsy folding carton next to a pricey candle just looks wrong) and a second one, which is jars turning up with chipped rims because nothing in the box was holding them.
Rigid boxes don’t fold flat. They get made up, glued and wrapped at the factory, and that’s kind of the whole point, it’s why they feel solid in your hand when you lift the lid. Board thickness is usually somewhere around 1.5 to 2.5 mm, and if your candle is a heavy one we’d go toward the thick end.
Styles? The lift off lid is the old classic, two pieces, nothing fancy about it. Magnetic flap boxes open like a book and shut with a little click, and people love them for gifts. Then there’s the drawer box. Slides out of a sleeve, and we think it looks great with tapers or three or four votives in a row. Each style changes that first minute of opening it, so picture your customer doing it, then choose.
No insert means the jar slides, and the corners of the box take every bump. Put one in and the jar sits in a cutout, held at the base and sometimes at the shoulder too. Our pick is usually a paperboard insert wrapped in the same paper as the box (neat, and it still goes in the recycling). Long trips across the country? Foam or a molded pulp tray grips harder.
One tip from our side of the counter. Leave a bit of room above the jar lid, say 3 or 4 mm. When the box lid sits right on a wooden or metal candle lid it scratches it, and in a hot July truck it can even dent soft wax around the edge, which nobody wants to open. The wrap sets the mood. Uncoated, textured paper feels calm, sort of natural, and it suits botanical or spa scents. Printed art paper is what you’d use for full color designs. Soft-touch lamination is that velvety finish people can’t stop rubbing their thumb across. Then you’ve got gold or silver foil on the logo, blind embossing on the lid, a ribbon pull to lift out the insert, and to be fair, all of it at once tends to look busy, so we’d honestly just do a couple.

Design help costs nothing. You get a digital proof before we print, and if you want to check how the jar fits we can send a physical sample first. Minimums are often around 50 boxes depending on the style, production runs 10 to 12 business days after you approve, and shipping inside the USA is free.
Sure. We’d bump up the board thickness and add a base insert with a tight cutout, so just send us the jar’s weight and measurements first.
Most of them, no. They come to you already built and wrapped, though if you’re short on storage ask us about the collapsible kind that folds down and pops back up.
The box won’t melt anything on its own. Summer trucks get hot though, and a few millimetres of gap above the jar lid stops the box pressing into wax that’s gone soft.
