Cupcake Box Sizes: How Many Cupcakes Fit in a Box?

Custom Christmas Cupcake Boxes

Ask a baker what goes wrong most with cupcakes and it’s almost never the recipe, it’s the box, because a box that’s too short squashes the frosting flat against the lid and one that’s too loose lets the cupcakes slide into each other on the drive home. Every time.

So here’s a plain answer to what people actually search for, which is how many cupcakes fit in a box and what size box you need for each count.

The Short Answer

You’ll mostly find cupcakes sold in 1, 2, 4, 6, 12 and 24 packs. Six or twelve? That’s what walks out the door most days. Since every cupcake gets its own slot in the insert, the box ends up sized by two things only, the count and how big you bake them.

Cupcake Box Sizes by Count

We’re talking regular muffin tin cupcakes here, the kind that come out maybe 2 to 2.5 inches wide at the top, with a normal swirl on them. Not the giant bakery case ones.

CupcakesLayoutTypical box size (L x W x H)
1just oneabout 3.5 x 3.5 x 4 in
21 x 2about 3.5 x 6.5 x 4 in
42 x 2about 6.5 x 6.5 x 4 in
62 x 3about 9 x 6.5 x 4 in
123 x 4about 13 x 10 x 4 in
244 x 6about 19 x 13 x 4 in

Every bakery fudges these a little (we do too, depending on the liner). Honestly the safest thing is to take one of your own cupcakes, frosting and all, and measure it.

Mini and Jumbo Cupcakes

Minis are about half as wide as a standard cupcake, so a 12-count mini box comes out close to the size of a 6-count standard box, and the height drops to somewhere around 2.5 to 3 inches.

Jumbos go the other way. At 3 to 3.5 inches across, a 6-count jumbo box takes up about the same space as a 12-count standard one, and if you mix the two up you get a lid that won’t close or a box that rattles.

Leave Room for the Frosting

This is the part people forget, because a tall buttercream swirl can easily add an inch or more on top of the cake itself. Measure from the bottom of the liner up to the highest point of the frosting and add about half an inch, and if there are sprinkles or fondant toppers or one of those little signs on a stick, give it a bit more.

Under 4 inches all in? A standard box is fine. Over that, you’ll want something taller, same idea as our tall cake boxes.

Why the Insert Matters

The insert is that card tray with round holes inside the box, and each cupcake drops into its own hole so nothing moves. Skip it and even a box that’s sized perfectly will let cupcakes tip over on the first sharp turn. If you only change one thing, add inserts.

Our custom cupcake boxes come with inserts cut for 1, 2, 4, 6, 12 or 24, with standard, mini or jumbo holes.

Window or No Window?

A clear window on the lid sells cupcakes, simple as that, people want to see the frosting before they pay for it. The one downside is a window makes the lid a little weaker, so on the big 24-count boxes we leave a wider border of board around it.

Muffins, Cake and Seasonal Boxes

Muffins don’t have tall frosting but they do have that domed top, which is why muffin boxes run a bit shorter. For whole cakes there are custom cake boxes with logo, and come December the Christmas cupcake boxes keep us pretty busy.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many cupcakes fit in a standard box?

Usually 6 or 12 standard cupcakes. Singles, 2, 4 and 24-count boxes are popular too.

What size box do I need for 12 cupcakes?

Three rows of four, so roughly 13 x 10 x 4 inches for standard ones. Got one with a really tall swirl? Measure that one.

How tall should a cupcake box be?

We’d say 4 inches works for most normal frosting, and if you pipe big swirls or stick toppers in, go up from there.

Do I need an insert?

If you want them to arrive looking the way they left your counter, yes, since the insert is what stops them sliding and tipping.
