Description

Running a subscription business means the box shows up at the same door every month. That’s a bit different from a one-time order. Your subscriber already knows what you sell, so custom printed subscription boxes have a slightly odd job: they need to feel exciting on the twelfth delivery, not just the first, and they need to survive the mail every single time.

We do these for beauty clubs and snack boxes, book clubs, a dog treat club or two, craft kits. Nearly all of them go with a printed corrugated mailer that ships on its own. No brown outer box. Your subscriber picks your branding straight up off the porch.

Custom Printed Subscription Boxes That Ship Without an Outer Carton

The usual structure is a roll end tuck front mailer in E-flute corrugated. Light, so postage doesn’t sting, and tough enough for the sorting machines, and the lid tucks in over two dust flaps and stays shut without tape (most people tape it anyway, to be fair). Glass jars or chunky hardbacks inside? We’d bump you to B-flute. A little heavier, a lot stiffer.

Size has a bigger effect on shipping than people expect. Carriers charge on dimensional weight, so a box that’s an inch too tall all round can push you into a pricier bracket every month. Our guide on how packaging dimensions affect shipping cost explains the math. Worth a read before you lock in a size.

Designing for Month Two, Month Six, Month Twelve

A practical tip, from watching a lot of subscription brands. Keep the outside consistent and change the inside. The outer print carries your logo and brand colors so it’s recognizable on the doorstep. The inside lid, which only the subscriber sees, can carry a monthly theme, a message or a little illustration.

Interior printing costs a bit more, but it’s where the moment happens. Lid up. Then the reaction. If your budget’s tight, print one inside design for the year and use a printed card or sticker to mark the month. That gets you most of the effect for a fraction of the cost.

Inserts, Dividers and Keeping Things in Place

Monthly contents change shape. One month it’s two tall bottles, the next it’s six flat packets. A fixed insert can fight you on that. What we see most is a box sized for the biggest normal month, with crinkle paper in the gaps, or else a plain cardboard divider people can pull out.

Same core item every month, like a bag of coffee or a candle? Then honestly get a die-cut insert just for that piece, because otherwise the heaviest thing rolls around and flattens the little sachets next to it.

Ordering Subscription Boxes Month After Month

New club, not sure of your numbers yet? Minimums are low, often around 50 boxes depending on the style. Once subscribers settle down we’d order a quarter’s worth at a go, since the price per box falls the more you order. The design team sets up the dieline and artwork at no extra cost and checks your files before print.

You’ll get a digital proof, and a physical sample on request. Standard production is 10 to 12 business days after approval, with free ground shipping across the USA. Compare sizes in our mailer box dimensions guide, look at plain custom mailer boxes, or browse our subscription box range.

Custom Printed Subscription Boxes FAQs

Can I change the artwork each month?

Yes. Since most digital jobs have no plate charges, you can swap designs between runs. Just allow for proofing and production time in your monthly schedule.

Is E-flute strong enough for glass?

For small jars with an insert, usually. Heavier glass or several bottles together is safer in B-flute.

Should I print inside the box?

If the unboxing is part of what subscribers pay for, it’s worth it. If cost is tight, a printed insert card does a similar job for less.
