Think of the little cereal boxes on a hotel breakfast buffet, the ones kids fight over. That single-serve format is what custom mini cereal boxes are for. They hold roughly an ounce of cereal, sometimes a bit more, and they’re used for hotel and catering breakfasts, sample packs, variety packs and subscription box extras.
Brands like them because they’re a cheap way to get someone to try a new flavor. A full box is a commitment. A mini box is a snack.
Selling to hotels? Then stick pretty close to the size they already know, which is roughly 3 inches wide by 4.5 tall and 1.5 deep, because the breakfast trays and the dispensers and those wicker buffet baskets were all bought with that box in mind, and a buyer doesn’t want to rethink the buffet for you.

Cereal goes soft fast once air gets to it, and paperboard alone won’t stop that. Nearly every brand fills a sealed inner bag first, then slides it into the box. So size the box around the filled, sealed bag, not the loose cereal. A bag with a big heat seal at the top can need an extra half inch of height.
The box is mostly for structure and print. It keeps the bag from getting crushed in a carton of fifty, and it gives you a front panel to sell on. If you’d rather skip the box entirely for samples, a small printed pouch from our snacks boxes or pouch range might suit you better. Plenty of brands do both: pouches for events, boxes for retail and hotels.
The panels are small, so be choosy. The front gets the brand, the flavor and one big image. The back and sides take ingredients, nutrition facts and a barcode, which take up more space than people expect on a box this size. We’ll check that your nutrition panel stays readable at the size it has to print, and warn you if the type gets too small.
Mini boxes for kids often get a puzzle, maze or collectible card on the back. It sounds like a small thing, but it’s the reason kids ask for a particular brand. Bright full-color print on SBS paperboard is the usual choice, while kraft board suits organic and adult granola lines. Inks are soy-based or water-based.
Minimums are low, often around 50 boxes depending on the style, and price per box drops quickly at volume, which matters for something as small as this.
