Custom countertop display boxes are an effective retail packaging solution designed to increase product visibility and encourage impulse purchases. Positioned near checkout counters or high-traffic areas, these displays help brands attract attention and improve product accessibility.
Whether you’re launching a new product, promoting seasonal merchandise, or displaying best-selling items, countertop display boxes create an organized and professional presentation that enhances the shopping experience.
Ideal for both established brands and startups, custom displays combine attractive branding with practical functionality to maximize retail performance.
Unlike traditional retail packaging, countertop display boxes place products directly within the customer’s line of sight. This strategic positioning increases product awareness, encourages spontaneous purchases, and enhances overall brand exposure. Whether you’re selling cosmetics, lip balms, CBD products, supplements, candies, electronics, or promotional merchandise, countertop display packaging helps transform ordinary products into attention-grabbing retail displays. We build custom countertop display boxes in every format: open tray, tiered shelf, slotted insert, header card display, and angled counter units in corrugated cardboard, SBS paperboard, and kraft board. Full-color printing, premium finishes, FSC-certified materials, and no minimum order quantity. Free shipping across the entire USA. Standard production runs 10-12 business days from art approval.A custom countertop display box is a branded packaging structure that sits on a checkout counter, service desk, reception, café counter, or any flat retail surface, holding your products upright, visible, and accessible to every customer who stands in front of it.
Custom display boxes are packaging solutions designed to display your product in a way that grabs attention. They are used on countertops or store shelves to increase visibility and encourage impulse purchases. You can customize them by size, material, printing, and inserts to match your product and brand.
The box does three things at the same time.
It holds your product securely. Individual slots, dividers, or an open tray keep each unit in place so products do not fall over, tip sideways, or slide to the back of the display where customers cannot reach them.
It carries your brand in full color. Every panel, the header, the front face, and the two sides are printable surfaces. Your logo, product name, flavor, price point, and any promotional message go directly on the box.
It sells without a salesperson. A well-designed custom countertop display box answers the customer’s three buying questions: what is this, why do I want it, and how much does it cost in the 5 seconds they spend looking at it before picking it up.
Also referred to as: custom counter display boxes, POP display boxes, point of purchase display boxes, counter display units, CDUs, custom printed countertop display boxes, cardboard countertop display boxes.
Most brands focus on the display’s appearance without understanding the science behind why counter placement works so well.
When a customer stands at a checkout counter, their hands are within 18 inches of everything on that counter surface. That 18-inch radius is the decision zone, the area where the customer’s eyes and hands operate naturally without reaching, bending, or searching.
Placing products in high-traffic store areas like the entrance or checkout draws shoppers in, potentially generating more impulse buys than ever before.
A custom countertop display box placed inside that 18-inch zone creates three advantages that a shelf product never gets.
Advantage 1 – Zero effort to reach. The customer does not have to walk to a different aisle, bend down to a bottom shelf, or reach up to a top shelf. The product is right there. Picking it up is effortless.
Advantage 2 – The customer is already in buying mode. A customer at a checkout has already decided to spend money. Adding one more small item to their purchase feels easy; the mental barrier to spending is already down. A counter display puts your product right at that moment.
Advantage 3 – No competition from adjacent products. A counter display gives your product its own dedicated space, not a slot on a shelf crowded with competitor products. Your product is the only product in that display, in that brand’s colors, telling that brand’s story.
Counter displays placed at checkout increase product sales by 20 to 35% compared to the same product on a regular shelf. That is not a marketing claim. That is what happens when you put the right product in the right place.
Not every countertop display box is the same structure. The style you choose depends on your product shape, count, and how customers interact with it.
A simple open-front box with no dividers; products sit loose in the tray, and customers reach in and grab.
Best for: Candy, gum, small packaged snacks, single-serve items, anything customers grab one at a time without needing to see individual units
Header panel: Standard – one upright back panel with logo and messaging
Typical count: 20 to 60 units depending on product size
A display with two or three internal shelves at different heights; each shelf holds a row of products, angled slightly forward so the front row tips toward the customer.
Best for: Lip balm, travel-size personal care, small cosmetics, supplements, products where multiple SKUs or flavors need to be visible simultaneously
Advantage: Gravity feeds products forward automatically; when a customer takes the front unit, the row behind slides forward
Typical count: 30 to 80 units depending on tier count and product size
A display with individual die-cut slots for each product unit; each product sits in its own slot, upright and separated from its neighbors.
Best for: Lollipops, lip gloss, pens, markers, lipstick, any cylindrical or stick-shaped product that needs to stand vertical
Advantage: Products cannot fall over, tip sideways, or slide to the back; every unit stays exactly where it should be
Typical count: 12 to 36 units
A display with a sloped base, the tray floor angles downward toward the customer at approximately 15 to 20 degrees. Products lean forward naturally, and the customer sees the front face of the product packaging rather than the top.
Best for: Cards, small books, stationery, blister-packed products, any product where the front face carries the most important information
Advantage: The customer reads the product face, not the top, which is where most product branding and key information lives
A flat open tray with a tall printed header card attached to the back panel. The tray holds the products. The header card carries the brand visual, product name, and any promotional messaging.
Best for: Trade show giveaways, promotional samples, small packaged products at service counters
Advantage: Maximum header panel height – the header card can be as tall as the space above the counter allows, giving maximum visibility from across the room
A display with multiple separate pockets or compartments side by side; each pocket holds a different SKU, flavor, or product variant.
Best for: Multi-flavor candy lines, nail polish color ranges, lip gloss shades, greeting card assortments, any product where the customer chooses between multiple options
Advantage: The customer compares options without needing to move products around; each variant is organized, labeled, and visible simultaneously
A header tab is the upright panel that extends from the back of a display box. It is perfect for adding your logo, tagline, or key product information. The extra height helps your product stand out, especially on crowded retail shelves or at checkout counters.
The header panel is the most important single surface on a custom countertop display box, and it is the surface most brands design last.
Here is why the header panel matters so much.
A customer standing at a checkout counter sees the header panel first, before they see the products in the display, before they read any product label, and before they make any decision to pick anything up. The header panel is what stops them and makes them look down at the products below it.
If the header panel does not do its job in 3 seconds, the customer pays for their purchase and leaves without ever looking at your product.
Here is how to make the header panel work.
Height matters. The header panel should extend at least 4 to 8 inches above the top product in the display. Taller headers are visible from further away, critical in a busy checkout environment where the counter is crowded with other displays and marketing materials.
One big element – not ten small ones. Your logo or product name printed very large. A single product image. A one-line benefit statement in bold. That is it. A cluttered header panel fails because the customer cannot process it in 3 seconds.
Brand colors make it recognizable from a distance. Use your primary brand color as the header background. A customer who already knows your brand will recognize it from 6 feet away, before they are even close enough to read anything.
The hero message goes at eye level. The most important text on the header panel sits at 48 to 60 inches from the floor, the natural eye level for an adult standing at a counter. Anything above or below that zone gets less attention.
This is the practical limit that determines your display’s footprint, and most brands order a display before checking what counter space they actually have.
Here are real counter space benchmarks by retail environment.
Typical counter depth: 18 to 24 inches
Available display footprint: 8×8 to 12×12 inches
Notes: Checkout counters in convenience stores are crowded; lottery tickets, register equipment, and other brand displays compete for every inch. A compact 8×8 or 10×10 display fits without conflict.
Typical counter depth: 24 to 30 inches
Available display footprint: 8×8 to 12×12 inches
Notes: Pharmacy checkout counters are high-value real estate; many brands compete for them. Smaller footprint with a taller header panel gets your brand more visible without taking up more counter space.
Typical counter depth: 30 to 36 inches
Available display footprint: 10×10 to 14×14 inches
Notes: Grocery checkout counters have the most available space but also the most competition from other brands. A distinctive header panel color and a product that customers cannot buy anywhere else in the store make the biggest difference here.
Typical counter depth: Varies widely – 18 to 36 inches
Available display footprint: 8×8 to 14×14 inches
Notes: Boutique and specialty retail counters often have more flexibility – the store manager decides what goes on the counter. A premium display with soft-touch coating and foil stamping fits the aesthetic of a high-end boutique environment better than a plain corrugated box.
Typical counter depth: 18 to 24 inches
Available display footprint: 6×6 to 10×10 inches
Notes: Café counters are very tight. Small, tall displays with a compact footprint and a strong header panel work best. Products priced under $5; energy bars, small chocolate bars, mints- fit the impulse buy moment at café checkout perfectly.
Typical counter depth: 24 to 30 inches
Available display footprint: 12×12 to 18×18 inches
Notes: Trade show booth counters have more flexibility than retail counters. Use a larger display with a tall header panel to maximize visibility from across the aisle. Products displayed at trade shows are often samples or promotional items; an open tray format works well for grab-and-go giveaways.
