Boxes for home dye kits, root touch ups and salon color. Tube, developer, gloves, the little conditioner sachet and the leaflet all fit, and we print the shade photo true to tone so nobody ends up orange when they wanted copper.
Your time is very important to us so we have kept it short.
Watch someone in the dye aisle sometime. They hold two boxes side by side, squint, put one back, grab another, and in the end they pick off the photo, nothing else. So custom hair color boxes need an honest shade photo. And they still have to swallow a whole kit.
We work with indie hair color brands, salons launching take home color, semi permanent and fashion shade companies, and henna and plant dye makers. Their headache is nearly always the kit, because you’ve got a tube and a developer bottle and gloves and a conditioner sachet and a folded leaflet, and it all has to go in without the sides bulging or the bottle leaking on the way.
Usually it’s a tall tuck end carton, big front photo, stands nicely on a shelf. Then inside we’d add a paperboard partition so the developer stays upright and away from the tube. Why bother? Developer’s often a peroxide liquid. One leak and the gloves are soaked, the tube’s sticky and the whole box goes soft and soggy, so yeah, the partition.
Our starting point is the tallest thing in the kit (nearly always the applicator bottle) and everything else gets a pocket around it, with the leaflet lying flat on the back wall so it doesn’t come out crumpled. Root touch up kits are easy. Tube, brush, slim carton, done.
Ask any colorist what makes customers angriest. It’s the hair not matching the box. So printing really matters on this one, full color, and if you’ve got a brand color reference we can match to it. Keep the swatches and the before and after shots true, no heavy filters, please, and if something in your file looks like it’ll come out darker or lighter on press we’ll tell you before it prints.
Gloss makes the hair photos look rich, and it wipes off when somebody grabs it with damp hands in a salon. Salon lines and plant dye brands usually go quieter, matte or soft-touch. A small window can show the hair swatch or tube color, but we’d usually keep the photo on the front as the main sales tool. For general beauty box sizes, our cosmetic box size guide is a good reference.
Hair color boxes carry a lot of text, more than most cosmetics. Shade name and number on every side, so it can be read however it’s shelved. Step by step directions. A strand test reminder and allergy alert. Kit contents. Ingredients. Space for a barcode and lot code.
Four small panels. That’s a lot of words. We’ll lay it out for you for free, the front stays clean and the back does the heavy lifting. Selling styling stuff too? Matching hair spray boxes tie it together, and salons that sell both color and extensions sometimes grab our hair extension boxes as well. More options are in our cosmetic boxes collection.
You can start small, often around 50 boxes depending on the style, and the per box price drops as you go up (handy when it’s a dozen shades at once). We send a digital proof first, then it’s about 10 to 12 business days once you say yes. Talk to us about your kit contents.
Normally, yeah. The box stays identical and just the art swaps, so we split the run between shades. Tell us your count and we’ll explain how the numbers work.
We would. A cheap little partition holds it upright, and if it does leak, at least the tube and gloves stay dry.
Most people pick gloss, the hair photos look richer and it wipes clean. Salon and natural dye brands lean soft-touch or matte, and honestly that’s what we’d do too.
Brands ordering these often look at custom lotion boxes packaging, custom printed cream packaging boxes, custom lipstick boxes and custom printed makeup packaging boxes as well. You can see the full range in cosmetic boxes, and our guide to cosmetic box sizes helps with sizing.
