Description

Not every product needs bright white SBS inside and out. Plenty of products just need a sturdy printed carton that costs less. Bux board boxes fill that gap. The board is thick and fairly stiff, with a coated white face that takes print nicely and a plain grey or brown back on the inside, usually made with a good share of recycled fiber.

We print them for food takeaway, retail product cartons, soap and cosmetic lines, hardware bits and promotional giveaways. Anywhere the outside matters and the inside mostly doesn’t.

What Bux Board Boxes Are Made Of

Bux board is a family of paperboards rather than one exact spec. The common type has a clay-coated white top layer for printing and a layered recycled core. It’s thicker than a lot of cardstock at the same price, so it feels solid in the hand, and it folds and creases well for tuck end and auto lock styles.

The downside is the inside surface. It’s grey or tan and not as smooth, so print on the inside won’t look as crisp as it does on SBS. If your box opens to show its inside, like a display or a gift box, we’d suggest SBS or a white-lined board instead. Our guide on cardstock vs corrugated lays out the wider choices.

Where Bux Board Works (and Where It Doesn’t)

It’s great for retail cartons that sit on a shelf and get opened once. A tube of cream, a phone case, a pack of sparklers, a bar of soap. It’s also popular for food items like burger and fry boxes, with a grease-resistant coating on the food side where needed.

It’s not a shipping box. Bux board is a folding carton material, and a parcel network will crush it under any real weight. If you’re sending orders by mail, pack the bux board box inside a corrugated shipper, or go straight to a corrugated mailer. And for anything wet or heavy, think again. Damp gets into the recycled core and the board softens.

Box Styles in Bux Board

Most common is the straight or reverse tuck end box, which closes with a flap at each end. For heavier contents, an auto lock bottom snaps into place when you push the box open and holds weight better. Sleeves, trays, pillow boxes and simple window boxes are all possible too.

  • Straight and reverse tuck end
  • Auto lock bottom
  • Sleeve and tray
  • Window cut-out cartons

Print is full color on the white face, with soy-based or water-based inks. Matte or gloss lamination, spot UV and foil stamping all work on bux board. Because the board is cost-effective, it’s a good place to spend a little on one nice finish rather than upgrading the whole material. If you’re looking at a general retail carton, our custom product boxes page shows what’s possible.

Minimums are low, often around 50 boxes depending on the style, and price per box drops as quantity goes up. Our team sets up the dieline and lays out your artwork for free, checks your files, and sends a digital proof before printing. Standard production is 10 to 12 business days after approval, with free ground shipping anywhere in the USA. Shipping cartons to go with them are in the corrugated shipping boxes range.

Bux Board Boxes FAQs

Is bux board the same as cardboard?

Not quite. It’s a solid paperboard used for folding cartons, while what most people call cardboard is fluted corrugated used for shipping.

Can bux board boxes be printed on the inside?

Yes, but the grey inner surface makes print look duller. For inside print, SBS or a white-lined board is better.

Are bux board boxes good for food?

They’re used for takeaway items like burgers and fries, usually with a coating on the food side to resist grease.
