A lip balm tube is roughly the size of your pinky. Drop it in a box that’s even a hair too big and it spins around in there like a pencil in a cup, which is why custom printed lip balm packaging boxes get cut to the exact tube, pot or tin you sell, and why every millimeter of print on such a skinny carton actually matters.
Who orders? Small cosmetic brands and natural skincare makers, mostly. Beekeepers with beeswax balm (we love those). Companies doing giveaways. And then there’s the wholesale side, because lip balm moves in volume, so most of our balm customers want one design they can rerun again and again at a unit price that makes sense.
Most people sell the standard 0.15 oz tube. Box for that? Usually close to 0.75 by 0.75 by 3 inches, a slim tuck end carton that hangs on a peg or stands up in a display tray. Pots and round tins want something shorter and squarer, sometimes with a little card insert so the tin isn’t sliding about, and if you do multi packs of three or four tubes we’d go with a sleeve or a box with a die-cut window.

Five panels. Each one about as wide as a postage stamp. Logo and flavor go up front, ingredients on a side, net weight and your address round the back, and the text gets tiny very quickly, so we go through your files and make sure nothing ends up too small to read once it’s printed.
Digital printing makes flavors easy. Same layout, swap the color and the flavor name, and mint, honey and cherry suddenly look like a family on the shelf. At this size we like gold foil on matte black, or a spot UV logo on kraft. We lay out the dieline and artwork for free.
One thing we’ve learned at the folding table. On a carton this narrow the glue flap and tuck eat a big chunk of the box, so keep anything important a few millimeters off every edge, since a tiny shift in folding shows way more on a slim balm box than on a big one.
The more you order, the cheaper each box gets, and on little cartons that drop is steep (a few hundred boxes cost a fair bit more each than a few thousand). You can still start small, though, often around 50 boxes depending on the style, so testing a new flavor doesn’t mean betting on a giant run.

Nope. Lots of brands sell bare tubes out of a display tray and only box them for gift sets, online orders or fancier stores, where a box makes it feel worth more.
The tube or tin is what holds the balm, the box is more about keeping the label and look nice. Still, keep stock out of hot cars and direct sun, soft balm warps inside its tube.
